Synopsis of Best Practices

Leading and Managing Change

Leading and Managing Change focuses on the importance of effectively leading change using Kotter's eight steps for success. Good leadership must inspire to make things happen with the ability to take risks and remove obstacles. Strong leadership is visible, involved, and gives the tools and support to enable things to happen.

Teamwork

Teamwork is the practice of empowering people to a common goal of achieving continuous improvement through a structured team environment. Teamwork involves the ability to motivate ordinary people to do extraordinary things for the benefit of themselves and the organisation. The session outlines the importance of team perticipation in goal setting, problem solving and facilitating change.

5S Housekeeping

5S Housekeeping is the foundation practice of  maintaining an organised workplace environment. 5S establishes a culture of discpline, reduces time wasted in searching for things, creates a safer workplace, and improves worker pride and morale.

Changeover Time Reduction

Changeover time reduction focuses on reducing change-over time as the key to flexibility rather then reducing the number of changeovers. One of the major reasons for producing large uneconomic batches is the excessive changeover time between products. Reducing changeover time is a major influence on an organisation's competitiveness to respond to market changes and demands.

Visual Measurement

Visual Measurement sets key performance indicators (KPI's) throughout all levels of the organisation and helps drive a competitive company wide strategy. Performance measures are productive when formulised and agreed with each team. A pre-requisite is visual short cycle feedback with each team responsible for updating their own scoreboard.

Problem Solving

Problem Solving is the practice of  pro-active solving issues and problems in a structured manner. Learn the basic steps to problem solving and the various tools available to find the root cause. A key tool to continuous improvement is the short duration kaizen event which is widely used by companies who have acheived lean excellence.

Waste Elimination

Waste elimination is the cornerstone of lean thinking. Waste is anything that uses resources, but does not add value to the product or service as determined by the customer. Learn about the 7 lean wastes and 6 machine losses that add no value to producing your product or service.

Value Stream Mapping

Value Stream Mapping is a tool that provides a blue print of all activities required to produce specific products and services. VSM is an effective method of identifying and elininating waste, improving flow and reducing lead times. The VSM document is an excellent vehicle for improvement iniatives and is a common language for communication.

Process and Material Flow

This practice improves work flow and shortens lead times by reducing non-value added activities and maximising throughput using the theory of constraints. Learn how pull systems using kanban signals will assist in reducing inventory and balance supply with demand.

Standard Work

Standard work focuses on the importance of reducing variability in processing. Consistent processes give consistent quality results. Standardising work cycles, work practices and procedures is the foundation on which continuous improvement can be made.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

TPM ensures every piece of equipment is always adequate ane capable of producing work. By increasing equipment availability, maximising performance and improving quality of output the equipment effectiveness will increase. Autonomous maintenance is the ability of operators to own and care for their equipment by performing basic maintenance tasks to keep their equipment healthy.

Lean Information Systems

Simple information sharing tools are an essential ingredient to competitive enterprises. Lean IT systems asks: What is the simplest way of information transfer and how sophisticated do we need to be? Is information overload affecting your performance?

Supply Chain Management

Understand how to collaborate with your supply chain partners by determining end customer priorities collectively as a team. Learn how to nullify the bullwhip effect through increasing the velocity and accuracy of information.
